Control is an Illusion

By Scott Bessenecker

We live under threat of nuclear fusion

The best laid plans in a world of confusion

Are randomly scuttled without a solution

Control is an illusion

I lost my work by my computer rebooting

I dodged Corona but walked into a shooting

Planted a garden, then a tornado uprooting

Plotted my destiny ‘til chaos went looting

Stay at home, get hit by a car

Travel abroad, a bomb in bazaar

Shut the borders to those from afar

Build a wall of cement and rebar

Live underground, or at least fortify

The bomb shelter’s safe but then by and by

At some point in time we eventually die

Invincibility is a beloved lie

We sacrifice to the god of security

Insulation revealing our lack of maturity

Courage is passing into obscurity

Aversion to risk is a form of impurity

Control is illusion

Safety delusion

Cocooned to exclusion

We’re well overdue for a risk revolution
